SaaS QR Tracking vs. Self-Hosted

The honest trade-offs. SaaS is fast to start and someone else handles uptime. Self-hosted is free, unlimited, and survives the SaaS provider going out of business. Here’s how to choose.

The core trade-off

SaaS QR trackers (Bitly, Hovercode, QR Tiger, Scanova, Uniqode, Beaconstac) sell convenience. You sign up, create codes, they handle infrastructure. In exchange you accept three things:

  1. Recurring payments — usually $10–30/month for non-trivial usage.
  2. Caps that scale up the bill — more codes = higher tier.
  3. Dependency on the vendor’s domain. If they shut down, every code in circulation breaks.

Self-hosted QR trackers (QR Track, Yourls + plugin, custom builds) flip the equation. You pay $0 for the software and a flat $5–15/month for the server. Codes live on your domain. You own the data and the uptime.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most use cases above 5–10 active codes, yes. SaaS tools charge $10–30/month and cap free tiers at 2–10 dynamic codes. A $5/month VPS running QR Track gives you unlimited codes plus full data ownership.

You're responsible for uptime. If your server goes offline, your QR codes don't redirect. SaaS providers handle uptime (usually 99.9% SLA) but charge for it.

Every printed code becomes a dead link. This is the biggest hidden risk — you don’t own the redirect infrastructure. Several QR services have shut down or pivoted in the last 5 years, breaking codes already in circulation.

Migrating from SaaS to self-hosted is hard because the SaaS provider's domain controls the codes. Migrating between self-hosted setups is easy — copy the database, point DNS, done.
